A dental implant is essentially an artificial ‘root’ typically made of titanium, which is placed in the jawbone to support a replacement tooth or teeth in the form of a crown (for a single tooth) or bridgework (for multiple teeth and implants).
A single missing or failing tooth, or any number of teeth up to a complete dentition can be restored with dental implants, providing a highly predictable restoration that should preserve and strengthen the bone as well as look and feel completely natural.
We extract the failing teeth(s) and place the implant or implants directly into the extraction socket whenever possible as the tooth or teeth are removed (i.e. immediate implants).
In addition, we provide an immediate ‘provisional’ or interim restoration of the tooth or teeth so you can still function and smile whilst the implant or implants stabilise in the jawbone.
Numerous studies have shown that the single most important factor determining the success and longevity of any dental work is in the skill and knowledge of the person who performs it.
Before any dental implants are placed I need to assess the health of your teeth and gums. If there are signs of gum disease or decay, these must be treated first. I will then take several x rays after which I can plan your treatment with you.
The titanium implant is screwed into the jawbone which will act as a new root. The implant will gradually integrate with the jawbone (this usually takes a few months). At this time a temporary tooth is provided that allows you to eat and function like normal.
The final step is the placement of the permanent ceramic crown which is matched to the colour and contours of your existing teeth. The new secure tooth is installed for life, no additional treatment is needed.
You should expect the new tooth to fit and function just like a natural tooth. Maintain your usual dental hygiene routine to keep the surrounding tooth and gums healthy.
A traditional bridge involves grinding down adjacent teeth to support the bridge. It is a stable solution with good aesthetics and function that is fairly easy to install. However, this alternative has two main disadvantages: continuous bone loss in the toothless area and healthy teeth are sacrificed on behalf of the bridge.
First the implants are installed; this is normally done in a single session. The titanium implants are screwed into the jawbone which will act as new roots. A temporary bridge may be placed at the same time making it possible for your mouth to function like normal immediately after leaving the dentist.
This is not a permanent alternative to a lost tooth, it is unstable and loosely attached which affects both function and comfort. A removable partial denture is made of plastic – a material that can’t create the same aesthetic result as a ceramic crown.
The implants need to integrate with the jawbone before the permanent bridge is attached. This is normally done one to two months after the implant has been placed. The time will vary depending on the teeth affected and aesthetical demands.
This solution is not very permanent, the resin bonded bridge will eventually come off, probably after just a couple of years and will have to be reinstalled. If several teeth are missing.
Installing the fixed bridge (example, 3 back teeth missing)
The new bridge will handle all the pressure that your strong natural back teeth did. You will have a stable and secure solution that allows you to eat what you want.

The bridge contains all teeth in one piece and is anchored by a dental implant.
This alternative is often perceived as uncomfortable and a bit complicated to use. Function can’t be compared to that of a bridge. This denture is made of plastic and metal which affects its look. It is quite expensive to fabricate due to its many parts.
A full bridge supported by implants or a denture retained by implants are the options available to you. Only a dentist can remove a full-bridge since it’s fixed to five or more implants.

The first step is in placing the dental implants to replace the missing tooth roots. Temporary teeth are then attached that enable you to eat and function like normal while waiting for the permanent bridge to be installed.
The final bridge is securely installed on top of the implants. With a full jaw replacement it normally takes two to three visits to have the bridge completely attached.
Your new secure teeth will look like natural teeth. People who have had traditional dentures before getting a fixed bridge often describe this as an overwhelming and very positive experience.
A removable full denture that is connected to either a ball or bar attachment, which in turn is anchored on two or more implants in the front part of the jaw. The implants help keep the denture in place and provide better function and comfort.
Cost is usually the reason why this solution is chosen over a fixed bridge although we can’t compare the end results. Removable full denture – a denture that is loosely placed on top of the gum to cover the lost teeth. This alternative has no real advantages except for price.
The disadvantages are: discomfort in eating, poor aesthetics, affected speech and sore gums from denture movement. Moreover, a full denture placed in the upper jaw severely reduces the sense of taste.
